Sugar is everywhere - even in the “healthy” foods we don’t suspect. What are some of the benefits of eliminating excess sugar from our diet? We asked Vitality’s veteran food scientist WLADIMIR BUDNIK for his advice.
Q: What are some of the negative effects of a high sugar diet?
A: “The problem stems from a combination of both high sugar intake and the intake of more calories/kilojoules than you expend during your daily activities. This results in a calories/kilojoules overload situation which can lead to obesity and Type 2 diabetes, and a variety of other disease such as cardiovascular disease. High sugar intake also significantly increases the risk of dental cavities.”
Q: How does Well Naturally No Added Sugar Milk Chocolate assist people in leading a healthier lifestyle?
A: “All foods contain a certain amount of natural sugars. Some foods such as fruits contain more natural sugars than others, such as vegetables. Adding additional sugars to any food products adds unnecessary calories/kilojoules, without adding to the nutritional value of that food. This is usually referred to as ‘empty calories’. By not adding additional sugars to our Milk Chocolate, we are eliminating the ‘empty calories’ that would normally be present in regular milk chocolate (which can contain anywhere up to 40-50% added sugar).
Therefore, we are leaving the Milk Chocolate with only those sugars that are naturally present in the ingredients used, such as the lactose (or milk sugar as it is commonly known) found in the milk powder traditionally used in milk chocolate recipes. So by eliminating added sugar in No Added Sugar Milk Chocolate, we are allowing people to enjoy the full flavour of regular milk chocolate without the ‘empty calories’ and all the other downsides associated with excessive sugar consumption.”
Q: What is the difference in nutritional value of natural sugar versus added sugars?
A: “There is little difference between the nutritional value of natural sugars versus added sugars. Excessive consumption of natural sugars e.g. eating lots of foods containing naturally high levels of sugars (very sweet dried fruits, for example) can cause the same undesirable health outcomes as added sugars. The only difference is that added sugars tend to be used to sweeten low sugar foods and beverages, and therefore contribute over and above the normal level of sugars consumed naturally throughout the day by eating a balance of sweet and unsweetened foods. The result is a calories/kilojoules ‘overload’ which usually results in obesity and Type 2 diabetes.”
