Medela Contact Nipple Shields can help you if you suffer from breastfeeding problems. They enable you to breastfeed your baby despite these difficulties. The Contact Nipple Shields protect your nipples during feeding and also help your baby to latch-on. The special shape offers maximum skin contact.
Medela Contact Nipple Shields are available in three sizes (S/16mm, M/20mm or L/24mm) and come with a practical box for storage and transport.
Directions
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the breast and shield.
Clean the breast and surrounding area with a damp cloth.
Do not use soap or alcohol which can dry the skin and cause cracked nipples.
Moisten the shield with water as this will help it to stick to the skin.Push the tip almost inside out and grip the wings of the shield. Cover the holes with the middle finger and place the shield centrally over the nipple. Keeping the finger over the holes, gently pull the wings of the shield until it fits snugly over the nipple.
Note:
The open section should point in the direction of the baby’s nose during feeding.
Both mother and baby need to be considered when choosing the correct size nipple shield. Assess the size of the nipple, so the shield fits comfortably, without pinching and the nipple fills the cavity widthwise.
In the case of prematurely, a smaller size may be needed to ensure that the baby is able to grasp
the shield so the lips reach the flat base, against the breast.
CLEANING AND HYGIENE
Important
• Use drinking water quality for any of the following described cleaning procedures.
• Clean shields immediately after use to avoid dry up of milk residues and to prevent from growth of bacteria.
Cleaning at home
Follow these cleaning instructions unless you are told otherwise by your healthcare professional.
Prior to first use and once daily
• Wash and rinse Contact Nipple Shields.
• Place shields in a saucepan of sufficient capacity.
• Fill with cold water until the shields are well covered. Optionally, a tea spoon of citric acid may be added to avoid a build-up of limescale.
• Heat it up and allow to boil for 5 minutes.
• Remove from stove and drain water off.
• Dry shields with a clean towel.
Note: food colorings may discolor components which will not affect performance.
After each use:
• Handwash Nipple Shields in warm, soapy water.
• Rinse in clear water.
• Dry shields with a clean towel.
