How Manuka Honey Dressings Work
The low pH of honey (approximately 3.5) also promotes healing by maintaining a “sour” wound environment. Low pH has been shown to increase the availability of oxygen from hemoglobin, decrease the damaging effects of high protease activity, and create a medium that is generally inhospitable to bacterial growth.

Manuka Health’s honey is a supersaturated solution of natural sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose), and approximately 17% water. This mixture exerts a strong attraction for water and, when placed in a wound bed, draws fluid up from the underlying tissues. This osmotic activity bathes the wound bed causing autolytic debridement - softening and lifting slough, eschar, and devitalized tissues from the wound.

The Manuka Health Wound Dressings are based on a proven hydrogel platform that combines glycerin in a highly absorbent gel matrix. The dressing conforms to the wound bed to maintain a moist wound surface and absorbs large amounts of exudate without drying out the wound bed.

The biocompatible polymer in the dessing releases honey as it absorbs up to 3x its own weight of exudate. The high absorbency allows the dressing to be left in place for extended times, but will not stick to the wound bed – the result is less frequent dressing changes without risk of retraumatizing the wound. The hydrogel sheet is backed with a vapor-permeable membrane that controls evaporative loss to maintain a moist wound environment without fluid build-up that can lead to periulceral maceration.

The exceptional absorbency of the hydrogel matrix is ideally matched to the action of the medical grade manuka honey as it absorbs the excess lymph generated by the honey’s osmotic pull.

What makes MGO™ Manuka Honey so special?
Manuka honey from New Zealand is the only 100% natural product in the world shown to have effective and reliable antibacterial activity due to its exceptionally high levels of the naturally occuring and potent antibacterial compound, methylgyoxal.

New Zealand Manuka honey can contain up to 800mg/kg of methylglyoxal. OTher honeys have much lower levels ranging from 0 - 5mg/kg. Experts agree that 100mg/kg of methylglyoxal in manuka honey is the minimum level for health benefits.

Manuka Health wound dressings are made with medical grade MGO™ 400+ Manuka Honey that is guaranteed to contain a minimum of 400mg.kg of methylglyoxal.

Directions

  1. Dressings are sterile until opened.
  2. Prepare the wound site by cleansing as needed.
  3. Remove the sterile dressing from the package.
  4. If cutting is necessary, leave the clear plastic cover sheet in place.
  5. To apply the dressing, remove the clear plastic cover sheet from the gel. DO NOT remove the white stretch backing material.
  6. Cover the wound by placing the gel side of the dressing directly on the wound.
  7. Dressing must be secured well. The dressing may be secured by stretch bandages, elastic wrap or tape.
  8. CHECKING THE WOUND: This can easily be done by gently lifting one corner of the dressing then pulling the whole dressing back until the wound is visible. As the Wound Dressing with Manuka Honey becomes saturated, it will look somewhat slippery and rubbery around the edges. This is a sign that the dressing needs to be changed.
  9. Remove before showers, baths and swimming.

Warning

Do not use if allergic or sensitive to honey or bee products.
