Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant found in every cell through out our body. Unlike other antioxidants, which work only in water (such as vitamin C) or fatty tissues (such as vitamins A and E), alpha-lipoic acid is both fat and water soluble.
Alpha Lipoic Acid, besides being an antioxidant itself also recycles other antioxidants such as glutathione, vitamin C, vitamin E and coenzyme Q10.
Alpha Lipoic Acid helps remove heavy metals and excess metals from the body. Heavy metals like lead, mercury and cadmium can be chelated to lipoic acid for harmless removal from the body. It is also thought to have an effect on other conditions of excess metals such as excess iron in haemochromatosis - a disorder of iron regulation in the body leading to the excess storage of iron in the body.
Alpha Lipoic Acid stimulates production of glutathione, a key antiodixant ingredient required for the detoxification of numerous substances in the liver. There are 2 important phases to liver detoxification, Phase I and Phase II. During Phase I detoxification, toxins are directly neutralised, or converted to more toxic intermediate forms that are then processed by Phase II detoxification. Glutathione conjugation is the method in which approximately 60% of all toxins are neutralised during phase II of the liver's detoxification process.
Alpha Lipoic Acid can lower blood sugar levels by assisting a better utilisation of glucose by muscles. It is known that low levels of lipoic acid often occur in diabetics, which can lead to common problems in diabetes such as peripheral neuropathy.Signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include tingling, numbness, itching and burning pain in feet.
Alpha Lipoic Acid has been used for years in Europe in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy. Reduced pain and numbness have been reported with no adverse effects using high doses up to 600mg per day.
Alpha Lipoic Acid can pass easily into the brain. It has protective antioxidant effects on brain and nerve tissue. Early scientific research in animals show alpha lipoic acid may help to reduce brain damage and increase survival rate after a stroke.
