Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of our DNA. Age and lifestyle choices cause telomeres to shorten over time. While the direct correlation between telomere length and overall wellness is still being studied, researchers believe that telomeres play a crucial role in supporting ones’ health.
Telomere length has a lot to do with aging and is what some scientists have used to assess biological age. Young cells have long telomeres and older cells have short telomeres. Every time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter and shorter. Eventually, they become too short to sustain cell division, and the cell dies. When the telomere is too diminished, the cell often dies or becomes pro-inflammatory. This sets the aging process in motion, along with associated health risks. Other factors besides aging that may lead to accelerated telomere shortening include stress, lifestyle choices and environmental toxins.
Maintaining telomere length is essential to overall health, and can be accomplished by supplementing with a telomerase activator*.
