Blackmores Lutein-Vision Advanced is a macular support formula based on the latest scientific eye research, containing lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 fish oil.
Findings from the second Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS 2) were released in May 2013 and found adequate intakes of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin have a protective effect on the macula of the eye. These finding add to previous research supporting the need for lutein and zeaxanthin for healthy macular pigment and overal eye health.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found naturally in the eye. The highest concentration is found in the macula area of the retina. They are also present in the lens. In the macula, lutein and zeaxanthin naturally form a layer of yellow pigments called the macular pigment which serves as a natural filter of the most damaging light (near to UV blue light) that reaches the retina, thereby helping to safeguard against free radical damage.
Research shows healthy macular pigment density helps protect the macula and clear, central vision in ageing. Higher macular pigment density is associated with healthier eyes and the retention of visual sharpness.
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are highly concentrated in brain and retina, specifically in photoreceptor cells and the vascular part of the retina.
The photoreceptors are constantly being renewed and therefore a constant supply of DHA may be required for proper retinal function. A marginal depletion may make the retina more vulnerable to damage. Low dietary intakes and plasma concentrations have been reported to be associated with Age-related macular degeneration.
Studies have shown a correlation between low serum selenium and age-related maculopathy. Supplementation with selenium in combination with lutein was associated with an improvement in visual acuity and macular pigment density. Selenium is also important to the lens of the eye.

Directions

Warning
This product contains selenium which is toxic in high doses. A daily dose of 150mcg for adults of selenium from dietary supplements should not be exceeded.
