Blackmores Pregnancy Iron contains ferrous bisglycinate, a patented form of iron that is recommended internationally for fortifying beverages such as milk and juice. It is a low nausea and low constipation form of iron that is known to be well tolerated, with less potential for gastrointestinal irritation.

Iron is an essential mineral for healthy energy levels and vitality, metabolism, circulation, muscle function, hormone synthesis and healthy growth and development. During pregnancy, iron requirements increase significantly due to increased blood volume and foetal and placental iron requirements. Iron supports healthy energy levels in pregnant women.

During pregnancy, the National Health and Medical Research Council recommends increasing daily iron intake from 18mg a day to 27mg a day, with an upper limit of 45mg a day.

Despite these recommendations, the median intake of iron among pregnant women in New Zealand is 12.1mg. A significant number of New Zealand women of child bearing age have iron intakes below 18mg a day.

In addition to supporting energy production and vitality, adequate iron in pregnancy is associated with good pregnancy outcomes including healthy infant birth weight. Iron also contributes to healthy cognitive function in infants and children.
